I’m worried about my mental health, where can I get support?

The NHS Choices [http://www.nhs.uk/Pages/HomePage.aspx] website has lots of information about how to look after your health, different health problems and what to do if you feel unwell. It also explains the different types of health services and how to access them.

If you are worried about your health then you could talk to your GP or call NHS 111 [http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/AboutNHSservices/Emergencyandurgentcareservices/Pages/NHS-111.aspx] for medical advice. Always call 999 if someone is seriously ill or injured, and their life is at risk.

Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) [https://www.healthymindservice.com/] can support you if you are stressed, anxious, low in mood or depressed and where this is affecting you doing everyday things, like working and going out. Speak to your doctor or contact the IAPT Services [https://www.healthymindservice.com/] directly on 024 7667 1090. IAPT can work with people who are aged 16 and over, who are registered with a doctor in Coventry, Warwickshire or Solihull, and who are not already under the care of specialist mental health services.

For more severe mental health conditions, the main provider of mental health services is the Coventry and Warwickshire Mental Health Partnership Trust (CWPT) [https://www.covwarkpt.nhs.uk/]. They can support people with a range of mental health conditions such as more severe depression and anxiety, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, dementias and personality disorders.

Wellbeing for Coventry

One-to-one, peer and group support for adults experiencing an emotionally difficult time in their lives. Coventry City Council runs some ‘in-house’ services which provide support to people with mental health needs:

The POD [https://www.coventry.gov.uk/thepod] is a service that helps people in their journey towards mental health recovery. In partnership with service users it runs a number of different community based projects. Development Workers are available for appointments between the hours of 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday. The Pod Café is open Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday 12pm to 3pm.

I still think I need to talk to someone about the support that might be available, who I can contact?

In general it is a good idea to speak to your GP in the first instance about your mental health. Your family doctor may be able to treat you, or can refer you to specialist mental health services if your mental health needs are more severe or complex.

The main provider of specialist mental health services locally is Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust. If you are referred to them you will initially speak to a ‘triage’ mental health worker, who will ask you about your current difficulties, needs and wishes. Advice and information might be all you need. If necessary, however, you will be offered an appointment for a full assessment with a mental health professional. This could be a nurse, a doctor, and occupational therapist or a social worker.

Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust has a number of different mental health teams, which are locality based.  The team you are referred to following triage will depend on where your are located and the type of mental health needs you have.

What happens to me after I have had my assessment in mental health services?

This depends on what you need and what you wish to happen. You may be offered various kinds of support, including medication, psychological therapy, community nursing support or social care. Some people do not need any further support from mental health services once their assessment has been completed. The specific needs and the outcomes you want to achieve are written down in your mental health care plan, and these will vary from one individual to another.

If I have care and social support needs as well as mental health concerns do I have to go somewhere else?

No. Social workers employed by Coventry City Council work in within Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership Trust, and are part of its multi-disciplinary teams. They will consider your needs and the outcomes you want to achieve. If you have ongoing needs they will continue your assessment and decide if you are eligible to receive care and support. This support will be arranged within mental health services. This will be written down in your Care and Support plan.

When will my Care and Support Plan be reviewed?

Once your support is in place, we will check back with you after 6 to 8 weeks to make sure that everything is working effectively for you. Your Care and Support Plan will then be reviewed on a yearly basis to make sure that the plan is still right for you. Reviews can take place earlier if things need to change. Should you feel that would like someone to support or be with you for a review, you could have a friend, relative or a Mental Health Advocate present.

If I am experiencing an urgent mental health crisis what help can I get?

In general it is a good idea to speak to your GP in the first instance about your mental health.

Safe Haven Coventry and Warwickshire [https://cwsafehaven.org.uk/]

Safe Haven Coventry and Warwickshire is a crisis de-escalation for adults aged 16+ in Coventry and Warwickshire. Available between 6pm–11pm, 7 evenings a week, Safe Haven supports individuals who are distressed or struggling to cope, either in-person or by phone, email, video chat or text.

The Home Treatment Team [https://www.covwarkpt.nhs.uk/service-detail/health-service/mental-health-access-hubs-878/] offers intensive support to people in their own homes, and tries to avoid a need for a hospital admission. They operate 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.
